Flight Training

Course Aim

The aim of the Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), PPL(H) training programme is to train students to safely operate a single-engine helicopter as Pilot-in-Command under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

The course provides the practical flight training and theoretical knowledge required for the issue of a UK CAA PPL(H), using helicopters with a maximum certificated take-off mass of 2,000 kg or less.

Training is conducted primarily on the Guimbal Cabri G2. In accordance with HeliSpeed Academy’s approved syllabus, up to five hours of approved helicopter simulator training may be credited toward the minimum flight training requirement.

Theory Exams

Course Objectives

On completion of the PPL(H) helicopter training course, students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and competence required to meet UK CAA PPL(H) Skill Test standards.

Students will be trained to operate the Guimbal Cabri G2 safely in normal, abnormal, and emergency situations, apply theoretical knowledge during flight including navigation, air law, meteorology, human performance, and operational decision-making, and conduct solo and cross-country flights in accordance with UK CAA regulations.

Graduates of the programme will be capable of operating a single-engine helicopter safely under VFR and will have developed the airmanship and decision-making skills required for independent private helicopter flying or further aviation training.

Throughout the program, you will delve into various subjects essential for helicopter pilots, including:

  1.  Air Law
  2.  Meteorology
  3.  Aircraft General Knowledge
  4. Navigation
  5. Flight Performance and Planning
  6. Human Performance and Limitations
  7. Communications

Medical Requirements

Before reaching the milestone of ‘Going Solo,’ two crucial prerequisites must be met: passing the Air Law theory
exam and obtaining a Medical Certificate. Typically, students can anticipate achieving solo status after accumulating around 20-30 hours of instruction.

For those aspiring to pursue a professional career in helicopter aviation, we highly recommend obtaining a Class 1 medical certificate. This ensures peace of mind, confirming your eligibility to hold a Class 1 medical. Alternatively, if your helicopter flying endeavors are recreational in nature, a Class 2 medical certificate is the recommended choice.

Both Class 1 and Class 2 Medical Certificates must be acquired through a CAA Authorized Medical Examiner (AME). It’s important to note that the initial issuance of these certificates generally incurs a higher cost than subsequent reissues. The validity period varies, with Class 1 Medical Certificates typically lasting for 12 months and Class 2 certificates having a longer duration, contingent on your age.

At HeliSpeed Academy, we prioritize the well-being and regulatory compliance of our students. Our guidance and support extend to navigating the medical certification process, ensuring that you are prepared and qualified to take control of the aircraft solo.
