What is Continuous Pilot Development?
The Continuous Pilot Development programme is a mandatory safety initiative operated by HeliSpeed Academy for all pilots wishing to Self-Fly Hire a HeliSpeed Academy aircraft.
The programme is provided free of charge and forms a core part of HeliSpeed Academy’s commitment to safe helicopter operations.
Purpose
The primary purpose of Continuous Pilot Development is to:
- maintain and enhance pilot skill levels.
- Reduce operational risk.
- Mitigate skill fade through regular, instructor-led development flights.
These flights provide a structured opportunity for pilots to refresh handling skills, reinforce correct procedures, and strengthen operational decision-making in a supportive, non-punitive environment.
Why Continuous Pilot Development?
Continuous Pilot Development flights are not Proficiency Checks. Instead, they provide a “skills snapshot” of a pilot’s current flying ability, helping to identify strengths and any areas that may benefit from further development before safety margins are reduced.
By conducting these flights at regular intervals, the programme supports pilots in maintaining the standard required to successfully meet their annual Proficiency Check.
HeliTrax
All development activity is recorded using HeliSpeed Academy’s HeliTrax / TrainTrax systems, allowing performance trends to be monitored while ensuring data is handled securely and in line with UK GDPR.
This structured approach supports both individual pilot development and HeliSpeed Academy’s wider Safety Management System.
Through Continuous Pilot Development, HeliSpeed Academy promotes a strong safety culture, consistent standards, and the highest levels of airmanship, ensuring pilots remain safe, confident, and competent throughout their flying activity.
